About the house on Serafimovich Street, 2

The famous "House on the Embankment", which is associated with many mysteries and legends, is located on the Bersenevskaya embankment of the Moskva River and occupies part of Bolotny Island. The official address is Serafimovich Street, 2, although in some cases an additional one is used - Bersenevskaya Embankment, 20. The residential complex covers an area of about three hectares. It has 25 entrances. Nearby, across the river and canal, are the Bolshoy Kamenny and Maly Kamenny Bridges. Opposite, across the riverbed, the walls of the Moscow Kremlin and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior rise. The building is better known as the "House on the Embankment", although its official name is "Government House". In addition, the complex was called both the "First House of Soviets" and the "House of the CEC and the SNK of the USSR". In 1918, Moscow regained the status of the capital of Russia, in connection with which the new Soviet government moved from Petrograd to the Mother See, along with a large "army" of civil servants. In this regard, in 1926, a special commission was created, which was supposed to be engaged in the construction of the "House of the Central Executive Committee and the SNK". It was headed personally by the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR Alexey Ivanovich Rykov. The site "on the Swamp", on the site of the former wine and salt warehouses, was approved only on August 24, 1927, and the construction itself was completed in 1931. The building was built according to the project of the famous architect Boris Mikhailovich Iofan. According to the original plan, it was assumed that the facades of the house on the embankment would be red and thus echo the walls of the ancient Kremlin standing across the Moskva River. However, money was sorely lacking, and therefore the walls remained simply plastered in the usual gray color. At the time of construction, the building was considered one of the largest residential buildings in Europe. There were 505 apartments on 12 floors, the entrance to which was carried out through 24 entrances. Only 2 apartments were arranged on the landing. Oak parquet was originally laid in them, the ceilings were decorated with artistic paintings, which were executed by restorers from the St. Petersburg Hermitage. The kitchens were equipped with a special hole for the samovar pipe. The residential complex had, as they say now, a developed infrastructure. It housed a club (today - a Variety Theater), a 1,500-seat cinema (known as the "Drummer"), a sports hall, a general store, a savings bank and a post office, a laundry and an outpatient clinic, as well as a kindergarten and a nursery. Fountains and beautiful lawns were laid out in the courtyards-wells.
